How to manage perfectionism and find balance
Firstly it is important to redefine success. People who think in a perfectionist way often equate success with flawlessness. Instead, try defining success as progress and growth. Celebrate small wins along the way rather than waiting for the 'perfect' result that rarely arrives. This only leads to frustration and disappointment, as us Toon fans know only too well!
It is also important to remember that not every task requires 100% effort. Some projects demand excellence, but others only require a solid effort. Learn to differentiate between when to aim for 'good enough' versus when to go all in.
Perfectionism is often fuelled by an ‘inner critic’ that tells us that nothing is good enough. Try and notice when these thoughts arise and counter them with more balanced perspectives – such as ‘I am doing fine given the circumstances, so well done me!’ Remind yourself that mistakes are part of learning. Indeed, embrace imperfection. Give yourself permission to make mistakes. View errors as opportunities to improve rather than failures. The most successful people often learn the most from their setbacks. Remember that we all learn to walk by falling down and getting up again.
Finally treat yourself with the same kindness you would offer a friend. Instead of being hard on yourself for not meeting unrealistic expectations, acknowledge your efforts and congratulate yourself on your progress.
Managing perfectionism is about balance. By embracing progress over perfection, you can reduce stress and find greater satisfaction in your work and life.
