The benefits of slowing down

A couple of weeks ago the Christmas lights were switched on in Newcastle – a stunning visual array that brings brightness to the city centre and great joy to those visiting or passing through.

However, in strolling down Grey Street, around the Monument or indeed  enjoying the sights of Jesmond or Gosforth, how much time do we really spend looking around us and enjoying what we see?

Modern life is fast-paced and we often miss out on so much as a result. Indeed some psychologists believe that we can expand time by doing things more slowly, living at a slower pace, and embracing more of what is around us in the moment.

By slowing down, you cultivate mindfulness, allowing yourself to fully engage with the present moment. This reduces stress, enhances focus, and fosters a sense of clarity and calm. Slowness also promotes gratitude as you begin to notice the small joys in life – from the beauty of your surroundings (including Christmas lights!) to meaningful interactions with others.

Physically, slowing your pace can lower blood pressure, reduce the effects of chronic stress, and improve sleep quality by signaling your body to unwind. It supports deliberate movement and balance, preventing injuries and promoting better health overall. Creativity can also flourish. As you stroll casually, your mind has time to wander and you can enjoy the time and space provided.

So, in this season of darkness (and light) why not take a few moments to slow down as you walk around the city to see where it takes you. You might be surprised.
