Overcoming academic pressure

With a consulting centre close to both universities in Newcastle we are familiar with the struggles faced by many students at this time of year.

The time of year when stress kicks in
For those who started their studies this academic year, the last few months will have been a time for settling in, making new friends, and exploring the city and its surrounding areas. For those more familiar with the city and university life, student life is likely to have been fun but hard work. However, for all students, this time of year can be filled with the stresses and pressures of end of year exams, essays, and submissions. This can be extremely challenging with worries about grades and end of course results weighing heavily as students work towards getting everything completed in order to meet their aspirations.

Balancing studies with self care
Managing academic pressure requires a balanced approach. Students need to focus on organisation, self-care, and resilience in equal measures. It's important to have a study plan with specific blocks of time allocated to studying, but also to schedule in breaks and self care activities.

Students should focus on:
  • the quality of their work rather than the quantity
  • aim to study in focused, distraction-free intervals (this approach is often more productive than marathon sessions)
  • exercise regularly
  • get good quality sleep
  • and eat a nutritious diet.

These things can enhance cognitive function and emotional wellbeing and help to support learning. Practising relaxation techniques regularly, such as meditation or deep breathing, can also be helpful for alleviating anxiety during high-pressure periods.

Seeking support when you need it
Friends, family, or mentors can offer encouragement and perspective, while academic advisors and tutors can assist with specific challenges. The important thing is to seek help if you feel overwhelmed.

Both universities in Newcastle have resources to support students manage academic pressures and stress so speak to them to see what they are able to offer. First Psychology can help too if needs be.

By taking a proactive approach to study planning, practising self-care, having a positive outlook and seeking support when you need it, it is possible to navigate academic pressure and thrive.
