Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy and Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy in Newcastle-Upon-Tyne

We are delighted to be able to offer both Cognitive-behaviour therapy (CBT) and mindfulness based cognitive therapy (MBCT) at First Psychology Newcastle.

CBT is an approach that focuses on how we think and interpret situations and how this impacts on our feelings and behaviours. This type of therapy differs to many others in that it focuses on current difficulties and how they can be changed rather than looking to the past for the cause.

CBT looks at the overall problem and aims to break it down into manageable chunks. This enables specific areas to be worked on and for clients to see how things are connected and the impact that they have. This type of therapy is often of shorter duration than other ‘talking therapies’ such as counselling, because the client is expected to apply their new skills and techniques between sessions to make changes to their actions and thoughts.

CBT has been shown to help with a variety of problems such as anxiety, low mood/depression, stress, phobias, panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder to name a few. However, it's not suitable for everyone, particularly as clients need to apply the techniques themselves, and this isn't always appropriate.

MBCT is an approach that combines CBT with mindfulness meditation techniques. Click here for more about MBCT.
